Back to School Night Builds Critical Teacher - Parent Connection

Media Release

Back to School Night at Bursch Elementary, as well as all Compton Unified School District schools, is a wonderful time for teachers to connect with their students’ parents and families. Students get to show off their classrooms, desks, and artwork to their parents, while parents get to build that critical connection with their teachers.

“Back to School Night is very important not only for the school and the staff, but it’s very important for the parents,” said Principal Aisha Provost. “It builds community. After COVID, we saw a decline in parent engagement and involvement at our schools. We want to make sure our parents know they are welcomed here at the school. We want our parents to know what’s happening at the school, and we want our parents’ support.”

Parents in Class

For teachers, they have the opportunity to meet and bond with parents: “During the Back to School evening, I like to have a connection with the parents so I can involve them in the educational process of their children,” said Dr. Tsado, a preschool teacher at Bursch. “I’ll tell them what we’re doing in the classroom, the expectations of the students, and the outcomes through the end of the school year.”

Parents appreciate the Back to School Night as well, as many hadn’t visited their children’s classrooms for several years due to the pandemic. “It was nice to see how her classroom looks because I haven’t been able to walk in here because of COVID,” said parent Evelyn Velasquez. “I learned that my daughter is really liking her classroom and what materials she’ll need for the school year, so I can go out and buy them. I also learned her class rules.”

Parents meeting

For other parents, Back to School Night allows them to be involved with their children’s education. “My child’s education is important to us because she represents our future, but not just our future, everyone else she’s going to impact,” said Roberto Heard, father of another Bursch student. “We’re hoping she’d going to have a positive impact on the world. So being educated on how the world works and how she can best apply positive energy into the world will not just be a benefit for us and the rest of the world, but also for her.”

Principal Provost believes building the connection with parents will help her achieve her school year goals. “This school year, I’m looking to see more parental involvement, looking forward to increasing achievement, and I’m looking forward to seeing kids who are genuinely happy coming to school every day. And I’m looking forward to seeing parents who are happy to bring their kids to our school.”
