The Office of Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) offers evidence-based solutions tailored to support academically advanced and highly capable students. We advocate for the implementation of gifted education methodologies to craft educational journeys that nurture individual integrity and ongoing development, preparing students for personal, social, and professional achievements in diverse settings. Our initiatives extend beyond educators of the gifted, as we champion talent development possibilities for all students. |

Intellectual Ability | The student demonstrates extraordinary intellectual development | The student must obtain a standard age composite score of 120 or more on the cognitive abilities test, CogAT 7 |
Creative Ability | The student characteristically produces unique solutions to problems, overcomes obstacles to thinking and doing, and perceives unusual relationships among their environment and among ideas. |
Teacher observation of gifted characteristics via the Student Profile of Creative Ability form. Creative Ability letter of recommendation from teacher and/or parent. |
Specific Academic Ability | The student functions at a highly advanced academic level in a particular subject area. |
The student possesses an overall score of standards exceeded in ELA or Math on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). The student possesses an overall score of standards exceeded in ELA or Math on the previous term’s common assessment. |
Leadership Ability | The student displays the characteristic behaviors necessary for extraordinary leadership. | Teacher observation of gifted characteristics via the Student Profiled of Leadership Ability form. Leadership Ability letter of recommendation from teacher and/or parent. |
High Achievement | The student continuously attains exceptionally high scores on achievement tests. | A student possesses an overall score of standards exceeded in both ELA and Math on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). |
Visual and Performing Arts Talent | The student originates, produces, performs, or responds at exceptionally high levels in the arts. | Teacher observation of gifted characteristics via the Student Profile of VAPA Ability form. VAPA Ability letter of recommendation from teacher and/or parent. Audition and/or student portfolio. |
