Q. How does a Spanish Dual Immersion program work?
Q. What is the 90:10 Dual Immersion model?
A. The 90:10 Dual Immersion model refers to a specific approach in dual immersion education, where students receive 80-90% of their instruction in the target language (Spanish) during the early grades, typically kindergarten and first grade. Over time, the proportion of instruction gradually shifts to a 50:50 balance between the two languages.
Q. What are the benefits of Dual Language Immersion for English dominant children?
A.
- DLI allows English speakers to develop fluency in a second language early on and provides them with authentic access to another culture.
- Teachers use various instructional strategies, including visual aids, gestures and scaffolding techniques, to help students understand and communicate effectively in the target language.
Q. What happens if my child does not speak the target language?
Q. Do Dual Immersion students perform well on state tests?
A. Research suggests that upper grade dual immersion students perform on par with or above their peers in traditional educational programs. The benefits of bilingualism and enhanced cognitive skills acquired through the dual immersion program can positively contribute to students’ overall academic performance.
