Fostering Golf at Foster — More than 300 students, teachers, school staff and Principal
Jacqueline Sanderlin (center), Ed.D., gathered for the opening of Compton Unified
School District’s (CUSD) Foster Elementary School’s new putting green. Created
through a partnership between CUSD, the school and youth golf organization Total Golf
Adventures (TGA), the approximately 650 square-foot putting green will provide
students with an opportunity to learn the sport. TGA will coordinate a new year-long
after-school program for over 90 students and provide equipment, including clubs and

Inarguably Victorious — Compton Unified School District’s (CUSD) Walton Middle
School’s Debate Team members from left to right: sixth-graders Angel Preciado and
Thania Escobar, and eighth-grader Edgar Preciado. The competition was held Saturday,
January 30, at the California African-American Museum, 600 State Dr., Exposition Park,
Los Angeles, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Walton’s team and Los Angeles-based Harvard-
Westlake School spent the hour debating the pros and cons of reparations for African-

Roosevelt Middle School’s Marching Band and Dance Team received honorary trophies
from the city of Compton, Tuesday, January 26, during a special assembly from 9:00 a.m.
to 10 a.m. The band, along with Principal Edd Bond and band director Charles Barnes,
accepted the honor, which commended the group for performing in last year’s City of

Running to the Rescue — Compton Unified School District (CUSD) Clinton Elementary
School fifth-grader Christina Leon (center) rushes to collect as much trash as possible
Tuesday, January 26, at Gladstone’s Malibu and Heal the Bay’s “Lunch and Learn.” The
event, held at the Pacific Palisades restaurant, 17300 Pacific Coast Highway, introduced
students to sea life and environmental efforts to keep California’s coast clean.

Mathematical Melodies — Compton Unified School District (CUSD) Mayo Elementary
School teacher Roxana Vargas introduces her second-graders to math equations through a
combination of step-by-step instruction, music, dance and the Swun Math learning
model. For Vargas, her combination of instructional methods is designed to engage
students through interactive lessons. Her classroom instruction will be featured in the
new episode of CUSD-TV Channel 26’s “Watch Them Learn,” which debuts Monday,

Annual Financial Aid Informational Workshop. The workshop provided attendees, all of

the legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Friday, January 15. The

of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell (right) sign the state’s application for Race to the
Top (RTTT) funds. The historic signing was held at Compton Unified School District’s
King Elementary School, Friday, January 15. RTTT is part of President Barack Obama’s
nationwide American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 stimulus package. Once
its application is approved, California could receive up to $1 billion, which would be

“You May Rise” — said Principal Sydney Ritchey-Burnett, CUSD Kennedy Elementary School,
1305 S. Oleander St., as she knighted the school’s Academic Achieving Knights, Tuesday,
January 19, at its Fourth Annual Knighting Ceremony. Over 100 third-, fourth- and fifthgraders
were honored for their student achievement in math, language arts, and proficient or
advanced performances on the California Standards Test (CST). The event drew more than 200
parents and community members who cheered for the newly knighted scholars. “This event is a
wonderful tradition. It boosts our students’ morale and encourages them to keep studying hard,”

Hanging with Frosty and Santa — Students play in the snow while Frosty the Snowman
and Santa Claus keep a watchful eye on them, Wednesday, December 16, at Compton
Unified School District’s Compton High School’s Storybook Christmas. The event,
which raised funds for nonprofit Share Our Strength, featured holiday-themed worlds
where guests could meet literary characters such as Alice and the Mad Hatter from “Alice

School ninth- and 12th-graders donated baby products and children’s clothes to nonprofit
Shields for Families, Wednesday, December 16. The Compton-based organization
provides intervention and support services for men, women and their families affected by
substance abuse or recently released from incarceration. Most of the supplies will be

Serving Kindness — Compton Unified School District Walton Middle School students
worked together to serve more than 300 seniors and community members, Thursday,
December 10, at the Dollarhide Senior Center’s Holiday Gala. The event was held at the
Crystal Casino and Hotel, 123 E. Artesia Blvd., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Walton recently
began a partnership with Dollarhide to provide student volunteers every third Wednesday
of the month. In November students helped seniors load their free food bags at the senior

Close Encounters of the Third Grade Kind — Compton Unified School District (CUSD)
Tibby Elementary School third-graders spent their morning learning about lunar
exploration with LEGO “MINDSTORMS” robots, Monday, December 7. The National
Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Aerospace Education Services
Project’s Robots on the Road program visited the campus to teach students about
NASA’s space exploration robots through various activities using the toys. Each robot

On a Mission to Feed — Compton Unified School District (CUSD) Caldwell Elementary
School students finish loading over 400 non-perishable food donations unto a Fred Jordan
Missions truck, Monday, November 23. Throughout the month of November, the
school’s students, staff and teachers competed to bring in the most food items for the Los
Angeles-based non-profit, which provides aid to the homeless and families in need. The
items were later used for the Fred Jordan Mission’s Thanksgiving Dinner, which fed over

free tickets to the University of California, Los Angeles’ (UCLA) Bruins versus the
University of Washington Huskies football game, Saturday, November 7, at the Rose
Bowl, 1001 Rose Bowl Dr., Pasadena. Prior to the game, the CUSD students learned
about UCLA’s educational programs at the “I’m Going to College” fair outside the
