Students to Battle for Accuracy at Fifth Annual Spelling Bee
Starbucks, Frito-Lay, Quiznos and Wal-Mart Among Sponsors
More than 100 students from 32 schools, grades two through eight, will compete
"til the last one’s standing," as CUSD stages its "Fifth Annual Spelling Bee."

Fifth Graders Dine at Lawry’s The Prime Rib
Lawry's The Prime Rib, 100 N. La Cienega Blvd., Beverly Hills, opened its doors
again for 75 students from George Washington Carver Elementary School on
Friday, May 2.
Todd Johnson, general manager, greeted the well-dressed students as they exited
the bus and walked the 50-foot red carpet, which Lawry’s rolled out especially
for them.

Dominguez High Student Heads to Oxford and Cambridge Universities After
She Wins International Contest
Sixteen-year-old Laura Villafana has lived in Compton for most her life, but
this summer that’s all changing. The junior from Dominguez High School, in the
Compton Unified School District (CUSD), is heading for England this summer,
where she’ll study at Oxford and Cambridge universities, all-expenses paid.

Compton Citizens Protest Against Proposed Education Cuts
Approximately 1,200 citizens gathered Wednesday, May 7, on Santa Fe Ave.,
protesting for one hour against Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s budget
proposal to cut $4.8 billion from public education.

Compton Education Foundation Honors its Sponsors of the Year
More than 200 supporters gathered at the Carson Community Center, 801 E. Carson
St., on Friday evening, April 25 to enjoy student performances, live music and
dinner at the Compton Education Foundation’s (CEF) first awards banquet,
“Center Stage Show.”

Compton Unified Board Meetings Adopt New Format
CUSD's Board of Trustees have adopted a new format for its semimonthly board
meetings.
Each meeting will continue to start at 5 p.m. However, as soon as the meeting
officially convenes, the board will hear public comments regarding closed
session items only. It will then recess and go immediately into closed
session.
