Information about Students LANGUAGE, RACIAL AND ETHNIC MAKE-UP OF THE STUDENT BODY
Compton High School is located in an urban community that is characterized by a large minority student population. Compton High School serves a culturally diverse population of approximately 2,500 students. The student body is comprised of 66.4% Hispanics, 31.1% African Americans and 1.9% Pacific Islander. Although, the Hispanic subgroup is categorized as one group, it is important to note that disaggregated subgroup demographics highlight an increase (25% of the Hispanic subgroup) in the Central American student population (originating from El Salvador or Guatemala).
49.9% of CHS students are English Language Learners. This percentage translates to a student subgroup of approximately 1,250 English Language Learners (EL). Over 99% of the EL population list Spanish as the primary language (L1). Over 49.7% of CHS students indicate that Spanish is spoken as the primary home language (.2% Samoan). School-to-Home communication and culturally relevant support programs have presented an ongoing challenge.
