Three Compton Unified Robotics Teams represented the district at the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League Robotics Championship in La Canada, CA on December 9, 2017. The teams faced off with 50 other teams from across the Los Angeles region.

Our teams stood strong in the grueling, day-long event filled with robotics challenges and presentations to panels of judges. At the end of the day, the ‘Roosevelt Middle School Lionbotics 2’ all girls team ranked 16 in the robotics games, ‘Jefferson Hydrobots,’ from Jefferson Elementary School ranked 30; and the ‘Roosevelt Middle School Lionbotics 1’ all-boys’ team ranked 35. All-in-all, not a bad showing for their first time at the highly-competitive regionals.

When asked how they felt about the experience and not taking home the championship, each scholar remained positive and complimented each other’s teams on their efforts. One student remarked, “We worked together as a team and we had fun—that’s what counts. Besides, there’s always next spring!” Another team member, from the Lionbotics 2 all girls team, challenged the guys to some friendly competition.

Robotics Three

Compton Unified congratulates these young engineers—they represented well and are shining examples of what our amazing students can achieve. Channel 26 produced a mini-documentary video series chronicling the teams’ journey to the regionals. You can view them here:
