Summer Bridge a Hit with Incoming Freshman

 By Dr. Shaunte Knox

Summer Bridge is an innovate program for incoming ninth grade students at Compton High School, Centennial High School and Dominguez High School.

The 6 week Summer Bridge program, provides incoming ninth graders with a preview of ninth grade English and Math with the goal of ensuring they are better prepared for Math and English when they begin them again in the Fall.  To provide students with an intensive look at each course, students focus on one class at a time. For the first 3 weeks of Summer Bridge students take Integrated Math 1 and for the final 3 weeks students take English.

An additional benefit of Summer Bridge, is that after successful completion, students will  earn 10  credits towards graduation.
In addition to learning, infused in the Summer Bride program are exciting events like Career Day, College Day and a Field trip to the California Science Center to view "Dream Big".

Career Day was held, Friday, June 23, 2017 at Centennial, Compton and Dominguez High Schools.
It provided students with the opportunity to learn from professionals in a variety of careers. Among the presenters were a corporate attorney, a television executive, a producer, an entertainment talent agent, a news reporter and 2 firemen.  All presenters spoke about the obstacles they overcame to pursue their dreams and the steps students must take in order to fulfill their career aspirations.  The lesson students learned from Career Day was, “You can obtain any career objective with focus, hard work, patience and dedication.”
